Proactive Third-Party Review Reinforces Operational Excellence at Amrize’s Edmonton Cement Terminal

Amrize Edmonton Cement Terminal team participating in a third party operational safety review

Demonstrating its continued commitment to operational excellence and employee safety, the Amrize Edmonton Cement Terminal team voluntarily engaged National Safety Services to conduct an independent, third-party assessment of its process systems and energy isolation program.

The objective was clear: validate existing practices, capture institutional knowledge, and further strengthen the reliability of critical operational procedures that underpin the terminal’s daily performance.

Carol Casey, CRSP, conducted a comprehensive onsite review, which included a full facility tour, direct observation of operational and maintenance activities, structured discussions with Operators and Millwrights, and a detailed evaluation of process-system interactions and hazardous energy control points.

This initiative reflects Amrize’s forward-looking approach to continuous improvement. With a 100-year history in North America, the company recognizes that operational reliability and resilient systems are strengthened through independent validation and collaborative expertise.

A defining takeaway of the review was the value of frontline knowledge. Their practical understanding of equipment’s behaviour, sequencing, and system nuances reinforces a culture grounded in respect for people and the depth of knowledge they bring to their roles.

Through collaborative working sessions, this knowledge was captured, consolidated, and incorporated into updated site-specific Energy Isolation Procedures. These updates align documentation with actual equipment configurations, isolation points, and maintenance workflows. These updates ensure the documentation reflects real operating conditions – reducing ambiguity while reinforcing effective hazardous energy control.

“The team at the Edmonton Terminal are exceptional to work with. Their commitment to safety and operational excellence is evident in every discussion and decision.”
— Carol Casey, CRSP

“Extremely satisfied with the work Carol and National Safety Services provided. She is very knowledgeable, patient, and positive.”
— Paul Russo, Terminal Manager, Amrize

By voluntarily undertaking a third-party assessment and investing in strengthened documentation, Amrize Edmonton Cement Terminal continues to demonstrate a culture of prevention, operational discipline, and continuous improvement. The initiative underscores a proactive organization that builds resilient systems through collaboration, technical rigor, and a deep respect for frontline expertise.
