Building Workplace Respect: From Regulation to Empowered Culture

Four office colleagues gathered around a desk, with one woman sitting at a laptop holding her head in frustration while the others stand close, pointing at documents and the screen, appearing to pressure her.

New Nova Scotia Workplace Harassment Policy Effective September 2025

Starting September 1, 2025, Nova Scotia will require all employers to have formal policies to prevent and address workplace harassment, recognizing that a truly safe environment is one that protects not just physical health but psychological well‑being. This change responds to a 2022 review by the Office of Equity and Anti‑Racism, revealing systemic issues of hate, inequity, and a lack of psychological safety in local workplaces. In late 2023, more than 600 Nova Scotians participated in consultations that highlighted key themes: organizational culture, leadership accountability, knowledge gaps, reporting, prevention, and victim support.

To prepare, employers are urged to review and update policies, ensure clear reporting and investigations, set timelines and communication plans, support safe reporting channels, and encourage open dialogue and trust in the workplace. Employees, in turn, are encouraged to understand their rights, safely report harassment, document incidents, and seek support through available resources like employee assistance programs and external agencies.

National Safety Services Inc. brings these regulatory intentions to life through practical, engaging training solutions across Canada. Our training empowers both management and staff with the knowledge and confidence to foster respectful, legally compliant workplaces. Bite-sized Micro Courses (30–60 minutes), such as our Harassment in the Workplace for Workers  provides awareness on what harassment is, how to recognize and report it, and how to contribute to a bullying- and violence-free workplace.

For leadership roles, our 60-minute “Harassment in the Workplace for Employers” course includes how to identify harassment, conduct investigations, and implement lasting prevention controls. Each course includes assessments and completion certificates, reinforcing retention and accountability.

By pairing Nova Scotia’s policy-driven groundwork with National Safety’s effective, accessible training, organizations can move beyond mere compliance and support a shared goal: a healthier workplace where mental safety, stress reduction, and the ability for every person to thrive are not just ideals, but everyday reality.
