AEDs To Be Required on Larger Construction Projects in Ontario
- National Safety Services Inc.
Starting January 1, 2026, Ontario Regulation 157/25 made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act will require any construction project with 20 or more workers to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on site.
The amendment to O. Reg. 213/91 (Construction Projects) establishes clear expectations: AEDs must be licensed by Health Canada, stored with specific supporting items (such as a CPR mask, gloves, scissors, razor, towels, and disposal bag), and protected from environmental hazards. The devices must be easy to access, clearly marked with standardized signage, and inspected quarterly, with inspection records kept on site. In addition, a worker trained in CPR and AED operation must always be present while work is in progress.
These changes reinforce the importance of emergency preparedness and ensuring that lifesaving tools are immediately available in high-risk environments like construction projects. While AEDs are the focus of this regulation, they form just one part of a broader approach to health and safety planning.
At National Safety Services Inc., our expertise lies in helping organizations strengthen their emergency preparedness and overall health and safety systems, ensuring that when new requirements like this come into force, workplaces are ready not only to comply, but to respond effectively in critical situations.
