Driving Innovation Through Safety: National Safety Services and Lafarge Canada’s Ash Reclamation Project
- National Safety Services Inc.
In a pioneering stride toward environmentally responsible construction, Lafarge Canada has partnered with National Safety Services (NSS) to support a landmark initiative: the Fly Ash Reclamation Project at Lafarge’s Alberta facility. At the heart of this project lies the Ponded Ash Beneficiation System (PABS), an advanced technology that reclaims and refines ponded fly ash by removing moisture, milling, and reducing excess carbon. The result is a transformed industrial by-product, now repurposed as a sustainable and efficient construction material.
This collaboration is emblematic of the shared commitment between Lafarge Canada and NSS to push the boundaries of innovation while prioritizing sustainability and safety. Working in close coordination with Geocycle, Lafarge’s waste management subsidiary, the project enables the reuse of fly ash in concrete, substituting up to 25% of traditional cement. This not only diverts significant volumes of waste from landfills but also meaningfully reduces carbon emissions associated with conventional cement production. Such progress is critical in the context of global energy trends, as highlighted in the BP Energy Outlook 2022, which forecasts 80% of global energy demand being met by renewables by 2050.
As an integral contributor during the construction phase, NSS’s role complemented Lafarge’s vision by ensuring a culture of safety excellence. By embedding NSS safety professionals within the project team, the partnership enhanced the safety management structure through:
This collaborative framework strengthened Lafarge’s ability to deliver a complex project safely and efficiently, while NSS’s specialized expertise in contractor oversight mitigated key risk areas such as competency assurance, role clarity, and regulatory compliance—challenges often encountered in large-scale construction efforts.
This partnership exemplifies how strategic collaboration between industry leaders and safety specialists can yield transformative results. Through aligned values and complementary expertise, Lafarge and NSS not only delivered a safer project environment but also helped advance Canada’s shift toward low-carbon construction solutions.
National Safety Services remains proud to support projects that redefine industry norms by bringing tailored, hands-on safety strategies to the front lines of innovation. Together, we are not just building facilities—we’re building a more sustainable future for all.
